Lord of the Rings was awarded for not only making a lot of money, but also for saving a sluggish movie industry at the time. So it is day three of this blogathon and now venture into the acting categories of the Academy Awards.I'll agree with that, Will. Today, we will be looking at Best Supporting Actress (HEY LADIES!!!!). Here is a quick brush up course on the award, for those of you who do not know. The Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress is awarded to the actress giving the best performance in a supporting role. Before this award, there was just a Best Actress category that could go to any actress with a leading or supporting role.

However, there were some cases of recipients that won when their roles were clearly supporting. The award was instated at the 9th Academy Awards (for the 1936 film season), and has so far award 75 different actresses, there have been some recipients who won multiple times. Personally, I feel some of the best performances in film are awarded to these women year after year.

So with no further chatting about it, here are the Ginger’s top 20 picks of the recipients of the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Included will be clips from these ladies performances with some acceptance speeches. Henson ( The Curious Case of Benjamin Button as Queenie), Marisa Tomei ( The Wrestler as Cassidy/Pam) Won Against: Amy Adams ( Doubt as Sister James), Viola Davis ( Doubt as Mrs. Vicky Cristina Barcelona is one of the few Woody Allen films that I can sit through, and that’s saying a lot because I am not a huge fan of his to begin with. This film is not only enjoyable, but the performances are spectacular, especially Penélope Cruz. She is not only vivacious as Maria, she really brings many levels to the character. Also, she plays crazy very well and gives a stunning bilingual performance. Won Against: Joan Blondell ( The Blue Veil as Annie Rawlins), Mildred Dunnock ( Death of a Salesman as Linda Loman), Lee Grant ( Detective Story as Shoplifter), Thelma Ritter ( The Mating Season as Ellen McNulty) (Disclaimer: Her speech starts at 4:37 in the second video if you want to skip the recognitions of all the nominees from past winners.) Just watch a clip of her performance with the acceptance speech to follow. HEY STELLA!!! Not only is Kim Hunter in the iconic character that gave us one of the most quoted lines in film/theater history, but she gives quite a passionate, tortured performance that just breaks your heart. Because of Hunter’s performance and her character’s story arc is so tragic, you’re just hoping her situation gets better, which for the most part it does not. Won Against: Fay Bainter ( The Children’s Hour as Amelia Tilfrod), Judy Garland ( Judgment at Nuremberg as Irene Hoffman Wallner), Lotte Lenya ( The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone as Contessa MAgda Terribili-Gonzales), Una Merkel ( Summer and Smoke as Mrs. Not only does Rita Moreno show the sensual, vivacious appeal of Anita, but she shows Anita’s strength, courage, and pain, especially during the second half of the film. Won Against: Annette Bening ( The Grifters as Myra Langtry), Lorraine Bracco ( Goodfellas as Karen Hill), Diane Ladd ( Wild at Heart as Marietta Fortune), Mary McDonnell ( Dances with Wolves as Stands with a Fist) She is stellar in this role, it’s not even funny. I don’t know about you, but I love Whoopi Goldberg, and one of my favorite roles is portrayal of Oda Mae Brown in the tearjerker that is Ghost. She really brings some light to this drama, and has some great scenes between her and Patrick Swayze, especially when she has to relay things he has to say to Demi Moore and other characters. Won Against: Valentina Cortese ( Day for Night as Severine), Madeline Kahn ( Blazing Saddles as Lili Von Shtupp), Diane Ladd ( Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore as Flo Castleberry), Talia Shire ( The Godfather Part II as Connie Corleone) This clip is one of the best scenes in the movie. There are very few small parts that make an impression on people, and in the ensemble cast of Murder on the Orient Express, Ingrid Bergman gives a performance that is a stand out from all of them. This was also a year with many deserving performances, especially from Talia Shire and Madeline Kahn. But Bergman takes a role that is very different from her other roles, and just grabs the audience in this role. Huge disclaimer, could not find clip with her in it, so here is the trailer with her acceptance speech.
